All great stations give back to their community, but you have to make sure that the charity events and ideas really mean something to your listener, and it doesn't become "just" a personal mission from a staff member. This week, we're featuring some charity ideas to help raise the bar on your community service. As always, your feedback and ideas are always welcome. Email:

Morning Show DVD - Make a documentary film about your morning show complete with behind the scenes footage, the stunt person footage, celebrity encounters and more. Sell it online or through a local client and have proceeds benefit a local charity chosen by the show.

Community Page - Provide a page on your web site that lists community activities like parades, festivals, fundraisers, etc. Include events and sponsorships that the station is involved with to add credibility to your community image.

On The Street

Ugliest Bartender
- Simply place collection jars in every bar in your town (or the ones who buy a sponsorship) asking consumers to help (station) find the (cities) "Ugliest Bartender." "If you would like to vote for the bartender you are looking at right now, please put some change in the jar." All money received benefits a local charity.

Fairy Tale Sampler - Your personalities along with local, regional and national celebrities record short childrens bedtime stories for a "Fairy Tale" sampler. Have the best stories pressed on cassette, CD or CD-ROM and sell them to benefit a local children's charity. Clients may participate by: being a distribution center, providing reading materials (Example: all stories provided by Borders), couponing in the CD jacket, etc. Another idea would be to hold an on-air, website or client registration promotion to find the best original bedtime story submitted by a listener to be used on the sampler.

Change For Good - Your "Change For Good" program is simple. Just set-up collection bins at various locations and encourage people to give you their pocket change for charity. A great partner is a mall who can donate the change thrown into their fountains.

Movie Stars - Approach a local movie theater chain and get permission to use your morning show as the trailer prior to the movie that instructs movie goers about the no smoking/keep quiet type policies. You could also partner with a charity to collect money prior to the movie (the trailer is your personality pitching the cause). Provide the theater with music tapes to play inside and some ticket give-aways.

Listen to the Music!

On-Air
Playlist Bingo
- Have game cards available at client locations, on the website, with the street team, etc. Set them up just like a Bingo card, expect use popular songs instead of numbers and letters. When a listener hears three songs played in a row from their card, they simply call the studio lines to win free cash and/or prizes.

Win It Before You Can Download It Weekend - Beat them to the punch by giving your listeners the new music, even before it's online. Great topical weekend.

Online
Musical Quickie
- Play a 2-second hook (MP3) from a song and ask listeners to email or register online and identify the artist and title to win free prizes daily, weekly and/or monthly.

Create A Fan Site - Create a station tribute site or a section on your website for a popular band and/or artist on your playlist. This may include workparts for your listeners to add to their fan sites complete with, "as heard on WXXX"

On The Street
CD of the Week
- Work with the record companies and/or the local music retailer to build a spot that features a new CD that's being released that week. The spot may include samples of the music, interview clips from the artist, retail discounts and more. You can also do a cross-promote on the website with graphics and links to increase the exposure.

Artist Petting Zoo - Have life-size stand ups of the brand name artists on your station and have them appear at station events, appearances, etc. Invite listeners to view the musical instruments they may play...and try them out. Have local musicians or representatives from a music store on hand to demonstrate how each instrument works...then let participants take a turn and play (or pet) their favorite artists instrument(s).

Win Your Height In CD'S OR DVD'S - The Grand Prize is a CD or DVD library equal to a consumers height Example: 200 CD's for 6 foot person, etc. This contest can work for many different promotions. A few examples would be: Register your height at a designated location(s) to win. Enter through a website. A Grand Prize for a Free Music Weekend. You could also give the contest a twist and have consumers guess the height of a personality or celebrity to win their height in CD's or DVD's.

Spring

As you know, a radio station gears up for two really big times each year, the fall and spring books. The spring is so important because we want to win big in the ratings game so the sales team may maximize revenues for pretty much the rest of the year. With so much riding on a ratings story, we offer some of our ideas to help guarantee a better then usual spring. This is also a great start for any company who utilizes radio in their spring marketing plans. As always, your ideas are welcome, email: ideas@lured.com

10 in a row or $10,000
Station promises to play 10 songs in a row every hour (or during a specific hour) - if the station does not play 10 songs in a row, caller (x) wins $10,000 cash!

Automated Teller
Give away station ATM cards that activate the machines to a specified number (frequency) of listeners. All station ATM card winners will be invited to a Grand Prize event where each may try their card on your winning ATM machine. Each card is worth a different cash prize and/or have one card worth a big prize jackpot ($10,000). You can also pick up all the finalists in an armored car to chaffeur them to the event.

Bahama Mama
Simply write, e-mail, fax or register on line and tell us in frequency words or less why your mom is the "Greatest Mom in the World." The best story (selected by the judges) will win a trip to the Bahamas for their mom.

Big Money Party
Listeners win their way in to a party hosted by your station to win their share of prizes that equal $100,000 (or other amount)! Everyone who wins passes to the party is guaranteed a prize, and the only way in is to listen to your station. Have big prizes and small to equal the $100,000. Great event to get the sales departments help and offer great sponsorship packages.

Bounced
The correct caller will try to collect as much cash as possible before the club bouncer, bounces them out of the party. Start the game with a sound effect of a club bouncer voice which announces increasing dollar amounts every few seconds (or a personality). Start with $20 or $100 and move up from there (whatever your budget allows). You can have different dollar amounts announced each time you play and make sure the "bouncer" kicks players out at differnet intervals each round. If the bouncer kicks them out (sounder) before the listener says, "STOP", they lose the money and win a smaller prize. If they say, "STOP" before If they say stop before getting "bounced," they win the last cash amount announced.

Cash, Cars and Stars
Use a sounder or song to award cash to the winning caller/participant (at least $100). The person who wins the cash is then read a list of five hot cars and they choose the one they would like most. You also ask the person what celebrity they would like to deliver the car if they win the Grand Prize (enter their choices in the final drawing). If the star chosen is not available to the Grand Prize winner, offer extra cash in the glove compartment. OR...have a list of celebrities (lined up prior to the promotion start) who are available that each winner can pick from.

Male listener has 30 seconds to describe himself for potential dates.

Two Song Challenge
The two songs have something in common (play them back to back) listeners call in and guess.

Little Theatre
Have children act out the parts of a popular movie or TV show, listeners guess what movie.
